I submitted a 2 5320.20's in one envelope.  Both were received by the ATF on 9 August.

Form #1 included the SBR I actually needed and a couple suppressors because I figured why not add them since I was already submitting the form.

Form #2 included a couple other cans I intended to bring, again only because I was already bothering for the SBR.

As I should have expected only one form came back, of course it was form #2, the one I really didn't need.

I called the NFA branch and was told the SBR was still pending while the other (form #2) was mailed back to me stamped approved August 12th.  Is it normal for multiple forms in one envelope to create a problem?  I still have almost 2 months before my trip but I am trying to get ahead of what seems like a weird issue if one was lost in the shuffle... Should I resubmit a duplicate form or just ride this out?

I'd just set back and relax. I just got one back that took three weeks from box to box.  You have plenty of cushion.

I've never had them split an envelope. Either all approved or all lost.

That's what I was worried about... But them having the serial number for the SBR and then telling me it was pending is what confuses me.  I guess I'll give them another week or so and then call back and ask.

The only issue I've had sending multiple 5320.20s in one envelope was when the post office returned it because I didn't have enough postage. Too heavy for a standard 47¢ stamp.

ATF would often send them back in 2 or 3 envelopes, sometimes at the same time, and sometimes a few days or a week apart.

I typically submit forms for a 1-year duration for any state that I remotely think I might want to visit. That way I already have approved forms in hand before I go on any trip, and I'm not waiting on ATF for approval.

Yep...I have 10 states worth (11 firearms on each) for all of 2017 sitting here signed and dated for 9/1/16. Just need to grab a flat rate Priority Mail envelope.

For one, you didn't need to submit a 5320.20 for suppressors, they aren't needed.
Two, I recently sent in one envelope containing one sbr for two states, four forums. I mailed it off on 8/1, it was approved on the 9th, and I received it back on the 17th. This should give you an idea of turn around time.

I wouldn't think that an envelope would get split up, BUT they aren't needed for suppressors, they probably just auto approved it and sent it back to you because of that fact.

You're not getting Form #1 back.  They can't approve for the pending SBR, and they don't return forms with just cans because it's not needed and is essentially an empty form with no relevant NFA items.

The form 1 for the SBR was approved over a year ago.  I think my designating the form "form #1" was misleading

Also as I explained I understand the 5320.20 was not required for the suppressors.  I just figured why not have it in hand if I run into an eager LEO who doesn't grasp the law during my drive.  But I suspect you are right about auto approving the suppressors since the form isn't required.

Actually they do.

And I'm with the OP on adding the suppressors to the list if you're already sending in the travel forms anyway. As noted, it's another document showing legal possession of your firearm/silencer/etc.

For this reason, I always keep my old forms after they expire. I figure this way, I've got dozens of official examples where ATF has reconfirmed my legal ownership of these items. Maybe it's not worth a lot, but it takes no extra effort, and the forms don't take up much space.

Never had that issue, but I also never get a bunch back. Just resubmit.

To close this thread out just in case someone comes across it during a search...

I received the second 5320.20 today, almost a month between the 2 forms I submitted in one envelope were sent back.

As info...

Mailed 9/1
Delivered 9/6 (they were closed on Sat per USPS tracking, and then Labor Day)
Approved 9/10 (yes, on Sat)
Postmarked 9/16
Received 9/19

Not too bad.

They accepted my homemade forms again, and also accepted "all lawful purposes" as the reason, or at least that's what I think I put.
