NFA engraving has specific depth specs that must be met. The engraving must be .003" deep. There is no spec for raised letter if that is indeed what he has. It is best to send it or take it to someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Based in your description, he's out of compliance.
7.4.3 Measuring the depth of markings. The depth of all markings is measured from the flat surface of the metal and not the peaks or ridges. The height of serial numbers is measured as the distance between the latitudinal ends of the character impression bottoms (bases). ETA: I don't know how the ATF feels in regards to colorfill jobs where the depth is not the same as it was after the initial engraving. |
