What is the purpose / reason for establishing a trust for NFA items?

I see this topic frequently but still have no clue about 'why a trust?'

I did a trust to speed up the process. It keeps you from needing a CLEO sign off and fingerprinting, and adds another layer of name separation between you and the firearm (although the trustees can easily be looked up).

If I could do it over I would use a software to draft one rather than paying $300 to have a lawyer draft mine.

Is a trust necessary?  Or, just a tool to make things easier?

I did a trust for a few reasons.
A) to get around the CLEO requirement(which is going away soon anyway)
B) Estate purposes,
C) It allows others access to your NFA stuff without you being present.

Is it necessary,No but for me it was the right choice. If yoy decide to do one get an attorney to do it instead of a generic program and make sure it is NFA specific.
A trust does not speed anything up your stamp is processed at the same speed as everyone else's .

A LOT of CLEO's won't sign F1/F4's.  Hence a Trust is set up to get around anti-2nd amendment CLEO's. It's not necessary unless you can't get a signature. I went trust route because I don't feel like I should have to ask "permission" to buy/build something that is legal.  Also unlike going individual, a trust allows you to have multiple people of YOUR choice to have access to your NFA items without you being present.
