I have heard that the engraving on an NFA SBR can also be done on the upper receiver.  Is there any truth to this rumor?
I have a Colt 6450 that I want to SBR and don't want to disassemble the lower completely to be engraved, mainly b/c I don't have the right tools.
Any help is much appreciated.

just makes it harder to legally swap out uppers.  You can also engrave teh barrel if you choose.
Barrel, frame or receiver

I would think that stripping the upper would be harder than strippping a lower.

The right tools as in the four thing you should have any way

Spend the 10$ on tools and do it on the lower
Much easier to swap uppers later and only have one thing to
Engrave instead of multiples

I did not want to have my lowers engraved, so I called the ATF directly and asked for my options.  They said the upper was not OK, however, the barrel is perfectly ok as long as you can see the engraving without removing anything.  It can even be under the hand guards, as long as the hand guards are nice and vented so it can still be seen.  That's the option I went.

Yeah, but one of the great things about sbr'ing an AR is being able to use many different uppers. You would need to engrave every upper that you would want to install. Just buck up and engrave the lower.

You cannot engrave the upper on an AR.

The barrel works, but every barrel you would use with your registered lower.

It is simply much easier to engrave the receiver.

Would it be possible to engrave the trigger guard, or would that be a no-no?

That's not on the list of items allowed, so no (separate part on most lowers)....

Unless it's one of the one piece billet lowers, in which case I don't see why not.

What are the "proper tools"? I took mine to Farmers Engraving in Denver, and it cost $45 per lower. Not bad but still curious.

Also, I spoke to a guy yesterday who had a Noveske Gen 2 lower SBR'd and did the engraving on the bottom of the trigger guard (it is part of the lower). Good idea!

punch stamps are 20$ or less on ebay.

1/16 is the minimum height.

You guys do realize that at 1/8" high letters, .003 deep... Alumablacked after engraving, you can barely see it right?

Sure.  You know where the engraving is. Mine is front of magwell. Nobody notices.
