If you can't own a SBR until you send in the form 1, how can you fill out the form 1 where it asks the serial #. I searched the site and couldn't find any answers.

The Form 1 means you're going to manufacture a new SBR.  You need to have a receiver to manufacture the SBR.

Buy a Title 1 gun or a stripped lower...  Whatever you're planning on doing.  The serial number is the serial number of the firearm.

ETA:  If you're purchasing a factory SBR, you'll need to pay for the firearm and have it shipped to your local SOT.  Get with him and fill out a Form 4.

ETA II: Welcome to the site

Thanks for the information. So if I have my lower, and my form 1 comes back, then I can just order the upper, or build the upper and I would be good to go? Thanks again.

Don't forget the engraving.  I like to recommend that you engrave before you send the form 1 in case something goes wrond with the process.  Personally I like to install my LPK before sendiing the Form in case I break something.

Just Sayin!

What needs to be engraved on the lower? Thanks again

1) Manufacturer's name (or recognized abbreviation); and
2) The city and state (or recongnized abbreviation) where the manufacturer maintains its place of business

The manufacturer's name should be either yours, trust name, llc name, or however you plan on building it under.

ETA: there's a sticky up top of the General Class III forum that has a link to the NFA Handbook, my suggestion is to print it and read it, because not following the rules will change your life forever.

My question to the engraving is, since you have to put your city down as well as state, what happens if you were to decide to move to another town?

Thanks everyone for the clarification. When I 1st started checking into making a SBR, it seemed like a daunting task. Be it is actually a fairly simple and straightforward process. Last year I machined a complete lower from aluminum billet for my TacSol dedicated 22lr upper using cad files from CNCguns.com. I think I will do the same thing for my SBR. Just have to engrave the proper text needed and I will be gtg. Thanks again for all your help.
