| If I owned an SBR, how much of a hassle is a move? |
|
IN STATE:
After you move, just write a letter to the ATF with the address change. You might include a photocopy of the form 4s "dear atf: I moved. I own: 1. SBR model 123 S/N 98766555 2. Suppressor Model 345 S/N 983749729 Please update your records to reflect the new address information: Me 123 Appleseed Clinton, California 90124 Signed, Me" |

I"m a little concerned about this too. I'll be moving from Florida to Nevada, getting stationed at Nellis AFB, with a can and an SBR. I won't have an address to give the ATF until after we're moved and have found a new house, so I'm not sure what to send them. You can get a temporary 5320.20 approved now for "informal shooting in NV", and have it approved for up to a 1-year duration. Use the address of a shooting range in the area. (You might even want to go shooting there some time.) That gets you legal to go to NV with your stuff. Once you have moved and your old 5320.20 is about to expire, file a 5320.20 for a permanent change of address (or a temporary one every year). |

I'll be in a similiar boat soon too, but selling current house, moving in w/ in laws for 6-7 months while new house is being built. So do I just notify the ATF after I move into my new house? |

Thank you for the excellent answer, that's exactly what I needed.

I contacted the NFA about this when I moved in April of this year.
The guy informed me that even though the 5320.20 is titled "Application to Transport Interstate or to Temporarily Export Certain National Firearms Act (NFA) Firearms" they are using it for permanent relocation/moving whether it's in/out of state. Box 2 states "Firearms to be returned to original location" and you can check yes/no. 'No' would be for permanent relocation. I sent it duplicate as it states to do so and received it approved two weeks later. Cheers |

So I guess I just do the 5320.20 w/ the inlaws address then 5320.20 when my new house is done being built? All moves are in the same state. |

Technically, you are not obligated to inform ATF when you move within the same state. They request that you do, (and I don't really see a downside to letting them know), but there is no law compelling you to inform them unless you start crossing state lines. |
