I have a home in Florida and have some NFA items there. Recently, I moved to Michigan for work and will be here for 2 years at least. I rent an apartment in MI but may buy a house later. Can I buy a full auto weapon up here? My CCW and DL are from FL. I can show proof that I pay bills (electric, rent...) up here in MI. Can I buy NFA items in both states? What if I didn't have a DL or CCP? What do I need to prove I live here also.?
ARM PS I'm considering a MAC 11 (9mm) if anyone is selling one. |

If you actually live in two states - spend time in each location during the year - you can buy NFA in whichever state you are in at the time.
If you liveD in Florida and now moved to MI with plans to move back to FL, then you may just live in MI and the above wont work ––- soooooooo think "dual residency" |

While having utility bills etc. can help show that you live there, you sometimes still have trouble convincing the FFL that everything is legit.
If you don't want to get your DL switched over to MI, you should still be able to get a state ID card. It is not a driver's license, but meets all of the requirements that you need to show proof of residency. The state agency often requires all of the same residency documentation that they would for a DL (I just got my MO state ID renewed and had to bring a birth certificate and utility bills to the driver's license office). I've been doing the dual-residency thing for a while now and have had no issues buying handguns, long guns, and NFA in both states. As noted, it is legal for you to buy in either during the time that you actually reside there. You still have to meet the requirements of both states. For example, if you buy handguns in FL, you would still have to register them as a resident when you bring them to MI (and this may confuse the MI police when you try to do it). Actually, I was questioned once when buying a handgun with my State ID. Typically, people have a State ID when they have had their DL revoked. When I presented mine, I was asked "are you on probation, or anything" to which I responded No. Sale / background check went through just fine. |
