I looking at acquiring my first NFA device (suppressor).  I live more or less in between two towns in which the CLEO of both sign off on NFA devices.  If I am thinking correctly the CLEO that is governing me is the county sheriff, of which I'm not sure will or will not sign off on a NFA device.  Could I go to any of the two surrounding town's CLEO and get my signature, or would I *have* to go to the CLEO that would, I guess, have jurisdiction over my location?  Any help would be appreciated and sorry if this was covered any time recently.

Don't forget Chief of Police of your City, Village, or Township, District Attorney, Judge, Head of State Patrol.  Pretty anyone in charge of an agency that's engaged in criminal law enforcement and has jurisdiction where you live.

There is no such thing as living in-between two towns more or less... either you live in one of the towns or not... if you live in one of the towns you can go to the local CLEO... OR you can go to your Sheriff.

I live in between town A and town C, more specifically in the township of town B.  Township B is too small to have a police dept. and the county patrols the area for them.  As pointed out I think I would *have* to go to the county sheriff to get my signature.  I couldn't go to the town A or C's NFA friendly CLEOs and get my signature; unfortunately.

Thinking about it, if I could go to town A or C's CLEO and get my signature, why couldn't I go across state to the CLEO that's a huge fan of signing off for NFA goodies (wish it would work that way).  I'll contact the sheriff and see what he says, and even pursue the pecking order that Nationwide listed.  I always have the trust route as backup.

Thanks for the help!

Your right the County Sheriff would be the place for you to start.

Thanks again for the clarity, that's exactly what my first post was questioning!

if you dial 911, whoever would show up is who you go to first.

or you could go with a trust/llc/etc and just bypass all that silly signature nonsense

If the agency has jurisdiction over you, the signature is good to go.

Here is what the CLEO attests to:

I certify that I am the chief law enforcement officer of the organization named below having jurisdiction in the area of residence of...
