In order to make buy an AR to register as a SBR, would I need to buy the lower and report that serial number and model number, and then buy the upper when the forms come in?
Could I buy the upper before and refrain from installing it into the lower?
Will LMT ship the upper with a 10" barrel straight to a person, or does it have to go through a class 3 dealer?

I'm looking to buy an LMT with a 10.5" barrel.

Thanks!

Buy the lower, do the paperwork.  Do not buy the 10" upper until you have the approved Form 1.  (They don't care whether it's assembled or not, just having all of the parts makes it illegal.)  Once it's approved, then buy the upper.

Uppers are non-restricted items, so you can buy an upper just as easily as a refill for your jellybean machine - they'll ship directly to you.

I am planning on building my upper.   Since I do not currently own an SBR or AR Pistol I know I can not own/possess the 10 1/2" barrel I plan on using.

My local dealer is going to order the barrel for me to save a few dollars.   As long as I wait for the stamp before I pick up the barrel I can pay for it and he can take delivery.  Correct?

BTW - How do I calculate the overall length of the SBR for the Form 1?   I can't own all of the pieces to measure it, and with the collapsible stock it is not a fixed number anyway.

good deal that you just can't pass up. Then, when your stamp comes in, the
bbl/upper is already paid for. You just have to pick it up.

imagine it,someone here has built it.Lucky bastards.

ETA- Buy the AR pistol lower, too. You know you want to.

I believe the OAL is taken with the stock fully extended.  If you already have an AR in some configuration (say, a 16" barrel) you can measure its overall length with the stock fully extended.  Then, to get the OAL length of a 10.5" SBR, you would subtract 5.5" (16-5.5=10.5).

If you don't already have an AR, just start a new post with your build plans.  As mentioned, someone will be able to go pull theirs out of the safe and measure it for you.

New post is here:  ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=22&t=240029

This will be my first CTR and first flash suppressor that is also a sound suppressor mount.     Thus I don't think I can accurately come up with an OAL.
