| I have recently been informed that I will be transfering to another station, specifically Turkey. I will be returning to my home station after 15 months, so in essence I am basically deploying like the Army. Now that has been stated the question that lies is what can I do with my SBR? I do not want to sell it as I will be coming back. How can I store it legally? I believe that I can store it in the Armory on base legally, because they store personally owned weapons there for guys that deploy and who have to live in the dorms, but I am unsure if they are SBR weapons or weapons that fall under the NFA rulings. I mean I would think that it would be ok since they store M4s, M249s, and M2s. All of which are would fall into a NFA catergory if they were not government owned weapons. Could someone please enlighten me on this? |

You can store the weapons on base but they must be in a locked container in which only you have the key. Nearly all armories have lockers that you can put your own lock on, or keep then in a locked guncase. I would not store something in the armory where I would be gone for awhile and overseas. If its just one lower, or a small lot, I would get a safety deposit box, or a small safe and store that in a large family safe if you have it. ETA Military weapons are not NFA and the storage requirements are not the same civie guns |
| I understand the security requirements and storage requirements for most onbase armories, I have worked in one for the past four years, but we have never stored a SBR or any other NFA weapon for that matter. I was just wondering, because I thought that there might be some special provisions because I know that I cannot leave it with my parents or a friend of mine without actually transferring it. And I do not want to do that. |

NEVER store a weapon at the arms room while on deployment. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! You may get your weapons back but I have seen too many people go through too much shit doing this. Some units are different and it may be ok, but if you are in an Army life cycle unit especially, I would not do it. |
I am unsure if that would apply to my situation, my parents live in another state. And the friends that I speak of also live in another state. Would this cause a problem?
I might be concerned about storing it like you said if I was in the Army, but I am in the Air Force. I have stored my own personnel weapons in the Armory when I was TDY at Lackland and I had no problem while I was there with the unit, they neither messed with it or attempted to open the locked case. But that was just hand guns, I am just concerned with the legalities of leaving my SBR with someone else, even if it is in an armory. |
Since they are in another state, you would need an approved Application to Transport Interstate. I would just use my parents' or my friend's address as the "transporting to" address, and follow the recommended storage procedures. |

You need to check the post regulations. Here at Ft. Hood the regulation states that SBR, SBS, and Suppressors are legal but MG are alright. I cannot live on base or take my legal SBR on post to utilize the range because of that reg. Some Generals feel like going beyond Army Regulation and DoD directive is a good thing and I suffer for it. |
