My Form 1 has been received by the authority and my personal check has been cashed.  Is it time to commit to engraving or should I wait until my paperwork is retuned with a stamp?

Does the cashing of the check signify anything positive or are all checks cashed and then, if the application is rejected, the govt. issues you one of their checks?

I'd hate to get the engraving done and then be told something was wrong that would require different engraving.

Thanks.

It signifies nothing. They cash all checks before the examiners begin work on the applications; if one is rejected, they issue a refund check.

It is often recommended that you engrave before sending in the paperwork, that way you don't need to go about withdrawing the application if the reciever is damaged, or dealing with other issues if it is approved before you get it back (especially if it is lost or damaged). Also, SBS and SBR have the same prohibitions with USPS as pistols, so that limits your options if you wait until after approval.

Thanks to both of you.  Good information and advice is appreciated.  I'm having the lower engraved locally so they'll be no issues with shipping it.  Nonetheless, I'll take it to the engraver today to avoid any issues after my stamp arrives.

Thanks again!

Another issue is if the engraver screws it up.  Now you're stuck with the messed-up SBR lower as you've already filed the paperwork.  If you engrave first, a mistake like that means you buy another lower for $100 and leave the botched one for a "long" AR.
