Two questions for the people that's been in game for a while..

1. How do you store your forms for longevity?  I have my forms stored in my safe and use copies for range, but the original paper forms themselves are starting to brown only after a year.  I guess this question is more for the document preservation crowd.

2. If your forms are lost/destroyed/deteriorated, what options do you have to prove ownership of your NFA?

When I get mine, I take them to work and put them through the copier that scans them into .PDF files and emails them to me. I keep a copy of those in my email archive and another in an NFA folder on my computer.

The originals go in my safe with a few copies. A few more copies (all double sided) are kept with my regular shooting supplies. One is usually kept in the bag/box that the NFA item lives in. I try to keep one set that contains copies of ALL my NFA forms with me when I'm traveling with them - just in case.

At any time I can print more copies from my PDF files.

If you happen to loose ALL your copies and the original of something, the NFA branch can extract a copy of the dup they have filed away and send it to you.

Did you print your forms yourself? Did they come from the same place? If they're all turning brown it might be an issue of them having been printed on cheap paper. Does your safe have any humidity control?

I haven't narrowed the exact cause but I suspect the paper envelope I had them stored in.  Right now, I've got the forms in a folder that hasn't shown any degrading of its content.  I have another piece of the same printer paper that's been in the safe longer than the NFA forms and it hasn't browned at all.  The safe has a golden rod to maintain dry conditions.

The idea about digitizing the forms for storage is a great idea.  If you ever need a new copy, you can just print it out.  I'll get on that pronto!

I lucked out that there's a high end copier with .pdf email capabilities a minute's walk from my desk. If I didn't have that, I have seen basic cheap USB scanners for less than the girlfriend spends on pretentious coffee in a week... ;-)

For perpetual storage, you can even file them in an online email service like gmail. Loose one while travelling? Hit up an internet enabled system and print another!

I also scanned everything to PDF format.  I keep copies of the NFA form and the Trust on my computer, smartphone, and online.  skydrive.live.com gives you 1 GB of secured free storage space that you can access from any web browser.
