We are thinking of getting a class 3 license at the store I smith in. There is only one problem. The owner is under the impression that ATF will be in the store all the time once we do this. He thinks it will attract the attention of the auditors and cause us to see them a whole lot more often than we already do. He basically thinks it is a huge pain in the ass and generally not worth the effort.

He was also told a story a while back about a group of "professional thieves" who's sole purpose in life was to break into class 3 dealers and clean them out, selling all the gear on the black market. I suggested that was total BS, as it would hopefully attract the undivided attention of the various ABC organizations.

Anyway, I am curious what type of experience class 3 dealers have with ATF as far as audits and what have you.

Just to give you an idea, we average 1 trace a month, and most are on guns sold over 2 years ago. We get audited about every 18 months.

If you don't want to post a reply here feel free to IM me.

Thanks in advance.

By law ATF can only conduct a compliance inspection once per 12 months. Having an SOT does not change this.
