I am new to the NFA arena so please help out a rookie- I just received my first tax stamp and I am having trouble figuring out How or If I need to mark my lower. I am building a Noveske SBR and registered the weapon by listing my lower’s serial number, along with the name of my trust on my form 1. I got the stamp back but no instructions on marking the weapon. According to the NFA handbook section 6.2.1 paragraph 2 it states the following:
Could someone help me decipher what exactly I need to do in order to be compliant with the ATF guidelines? |

Do NOT abbreviate the Trust's name! If your trust is called the John Oliver Doe Revocable Living Trust, you cannot engrave "JOD Trust." "JOD" could stand for anything and the authorities will not have proof that it belongs to your trust. It must say "John Oliver Doe Trust" + the city and state. States can be abbreviated, but spell out the city. |
I don't know. If you haven't sent it already, you might want to use some white out and write over it. When filling out any type of form, especially those for the government, I always make a point of spelling everything out to the letter. It is usually a lot of hassle to have forms returned to you and have to start paperwork over again. Honestly, I would print exactly what is to be engraved on the receiver in the 4h box. That way, there is no question. |

Once again ... you should not list your planned markings in box 4h, which is only for any additional markings beyond the host manufacturer's info and the serial number. For example: If your host gun is also engraved "1 of 1,000" or "Property of SFPD" or even "Tactical As All Get Out Edition", you must list this info in 4h. If there are no markings beyond the name/city/state of the host manufacturer and gun's serial number, 4h should be left blank. The maker's marks (your info) are required by federal law, and you must engrave them regardless and irrespective of anything marked in 4h. |
Other posters info is good, but if you like, here is the ATF language detailing the process www.atf.gov/pub/qtrly_bulletins/vol3_qb2001/subpartc.pdf |

So how does one determine if the engraving is Specifically, " a minimum height of 1/16th inch and a minimum depth of .003 inch for serial numbers and a minimum depth of .003 inch for all other required markings. I ask about the .003" because I have a local shop that can laser engrave my lower but I have no idea if it is .003" deep. How thick is the typical finish on a lower? |
You can engrave it anytime before you actually assemble it as an SBR. That can be before you get ATF approval, or after approval but before you put on the sub-16'' barrel. |
