I just called the NFA branch at the ATF and asked for the progress on my form 1. The fella that answered said that my paperwork has been sent to the FBI for final approval. My question is why does the FBI have my form 1? The guy said that it was a normal thing and that my paperwork was just going through the appropriate hoops. I may be ignorant, but I didn't know that the FBI was involved with this process at all. Please help me to understand how much longer this process may take. the guy said "a couple of weeks"

I'm pretty certain he meant "fbi fingerprint check."  That's just part of the process.

OK, with me being a very impatient person, I called back and asked them to explain a little bit more. They said that it is the fingerprint check that they are waiting for. Is this what they refer to as a pending date? I'm just trying to figure out a basic idea of how long it will be. They said that they sent them out to the FBI on monday. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The easiest way to track a basic timeline is with the 2006 thread for approvals.  Looks there averaging about 1 week from pending to Approved.  Mine went pending on 8/9 and approved 8/15 so pretty close to it!!

Mine was also approved on the 15th but it had been pending since the 1st.

Mine went pending on August 1st.  Called this morning. Still no joy.  Hopefully soon, but it probably doesn't matter that much since I went and spent my SBR money on a suppressor instead.  So as long as the Form 1 is approved before X-Mas, I should be good.  The Form 4 may be another matter entirely.

How can you tell it has gone pending? I just purchased my first M16A1 and the time is moving backwards.

Give ATF 3-4 weeks f/ check cashed, call with Serial # and they can tell you if pending.

If you call and ask them to check the status of your transfer they will tell you when it went pending. You will need your paperwork in front of you when you call.

Thank you.

I haven't felt like this since a kid before Christmas.

I know the wait sucks but you still have a long way to go. Mine only took 10 after the check cashed to go pending but a lot of them have been taking a lot longer. After mine was pending it took 15 days to get approved and I don't know when it will get back to me. It really sucks buying your first full-auto and then not being able to play with it but at least we can still own them. Good luck and I hope the time fly's for you but I know that hasn't happened for me.

I wasn't expecting it to be in my pocession until October. If lucky a week or two earlier. But I just picked up a suppressor that I mailed the forms 7/25/06. Now that's fast. 24 days mail box to pick up.
