Alright, So I got a Lee Real Bullet mold for my .54 TC Hawken.  I've read numerous articles about their accuracy and ease of use.  I must be doing something wrong as I've found horrible accuracy all the way around with them.  Advise me before they go back into the melting pot to make more round balls.

I cast the bullets,  lube the grooves with bore butter, load over 90gr 777 charge.  What am I missing?  These things shoot barn door sized groups, while I get about 1.5" groups with patched round ball.

Use real black powder and back your charge down about 15grs.

Use real black powder. A good place to start is 1 grain for each 1/100th" of caliber. 50gr for .50 caliber then work up toward the mfr's max load in 5gr increments.

the real Bullet is a Maxi type ball?

accuracy has numerous tangibles effecting it.

1- charge
2-bullet
3 patch

any one of those can cause chaos. since it doesn't use a patch, you are down to 2. I bet an 80 gr charge would do better in the gun.

Don't forget the bullet metal- are you using pure lead?

Yes, pure soft lead.

Try some sort of wadding between the ball and the powder, gas passing the ball or gas erosion of the base can seriously degrade accuracy.  With a heavy charge of 777 like that, I'm betting that is your problem.

Just match your bore diameter from the chart to figure out what size you need.  I would probably go with the "32 gauge" wads.

What is your twist?  If its 1 n 66 it will not shoot them well at all.  If its a 1 x 48 it might shoot them.  Real black powder 2ff will do better than the fake stuff

K it is a Maxi.

are you trying to use a patch with it?

try various types of lube on those bullets. some guns like certain lubes in certain loads, but I would certainly play around with those charges first.

I purchased two REAL molds this past year for my 50 cal Knight. Most of my experiments have been with the 250 gr bullets. I also have the 320 gr but haven't done much with that one yet. What I discovered is despite the claims, I had to clean between at least every 2nd shot otherwise accuracy would go to crap. I decided that this was a pain, so I tried using a felt patch between the ball and the powder to cut down on the cleaning. I was able to get excellent accuracy out to 50 yards without any cleaning between shots, but when I get to 100 I cannot seem to get a descent group. I haven't had the chance to play with it some more to try and figure it out, but my next step is to try to clean between each shot and use the felt wad or try the 320gr bullet. I'm thinking that maybe the lighter and shorter 250 gr bullet becomes unstable past 50 yards. This was using powder loads between 80-95 gr of real Black Powder FFg.
