I recently purchased a custom reproduction flintlock Virginia Long Rifle (pics to come later) and was just wondering what some of your experiences have been with similar rifles and if you guys had any tips/tricks I should know. My uncle built it by hand and it's all custom fitted. He gave me a lot of reading material and information that I have been through. I was just looking for some more outside information.

Real black powder is the only answer here for consistent ignition in a flintlock, Goex on the cheap and Swiss on the expensive end.    There are other manufacturers but I don't have expirience with them.

Outside of brands what type are you using? 2F? 3F? etc.

And how are y'all figuring out loads?

What caliber? I shoot ffg in big bore say .50 and up, fffg in small bore and cap and ball and fffg as primer though you can usually get by with regular charge powder as primer too. Look in the thread about thr pedersoli pistol, I posted a link to pedersoli's load data. You can look at their frontier rifle which should be similar to yours. Really though, what does your uncle recommend? I'm sure he will steer you right if he can build the rifle.

He was saying FFF which is what I have, I was just trying to get some more info is all, see what other people's experiences have been. It's a .50 flintlock.

Lots of people use 3F in .50 with a max of around 70 grains.  Some like it some don't.  You'll have to try it yourself and compare with 2F to see what you and your rifle likes best.

I shoot 50-100 grains(by volume NOT weight) of 3f. I use the same powder for the charge and prime. Keep touch hole clear, sharp flint. I like black English flints. To clean, just HOT soapy water works fine, oil well. Mine likes 490 balls and Crisco for lube. Track Of the Wolf is a good source for supplies.

Basically the same thing he told me... And he gave me Track of the Wolf and some other sites. He gave me about 10 black English flints and said to use 490 balls with .010 patching. He was saying to start off at 85 grains and depending on ranges and what I like to adjust from there.
