I have a new to me, nearly brand new Traditions 50cal BL Pwder rifle.
I fired, cleaned, fired 10 caps before I got a clear burn to the barrel(dust pile moved with cap going off)
loaded with 40 units of pyrodex with a wad and fired with great success twice
fully loaded with 45 units of Pyrodex a wad and a mini ball at target 100' away and fired with again, great successa
took weapon out today.
loaded as yesterday
aimed fired, BANG,,no BOOM I assume hang fire, lay down weapon and walk away about 10 min
cleaned firing hole, new cap, aim, BANG,,no boom, repeat 3 more times

now what? (besides pulling bullet etc, gingerly
why the issue powder dry, rifle dry, powder new, caps new..
HELP>....

sounds like you "dry balled" it Chef, you know how to check for that I presume?, you might take the nipple off and if you have access to some 4F powder dribble a as much as you can down into the breech and clear the ball,

nope, got a full charge of powder, checked and double checked..

powder,  wad, ball..if that is what you're thinkin!

being my entire second time,, I was ultra careful..and very fustrated by the brass tube style powder flask..very difficult to get the powder to shake out into the measureing tube.

if I read this correctly you have a wad over 40 gr of Pyrodex?....it may be possible that the wad is covering the hole in the bolster/breech and not allowing the cap to ignite that main charge.

if it is truly a minie ball with a hollow base ....no you don't, however a minie ball is probably  not the best choice of projectile, the old round ball has worked for a couple hundred years quite well.  especially while getting the fundamentals of load development, you will probably have to pull the ball on this one, i wouldn't recommend trying to remove the breech plug to clear the load, that would be a LAST resort, there are kind of specific tools and procedures for that .

the patch I used was the gunbutter brand and it appears to have gotten the powder damp,,,like I said above, dumb ass

cleaned it out, blew it out, dried it out..add powder and a paper patch, cap'd it and BANG KaBoom...as it should

shot a dozen rounds today, Accurate rifle...50 cal destroys a gal jug of water at 80yrds

If it happens in the future - remove the nipple, shake out as much powder as possible, put in some 4F black powder, replace the nipple and shoot the ball out.  It won't go far, but it will clear the muzzle.
