| Newbie question.....What is the difference between the number 10, number 11 and the 209 caps? I recently bought a reproduction boot pistol that is supposed to take an #11 cap - it didn't! The nipple was too large. Are the #10's larger? And what about the #209's? |
IIRC, the #10 are also called 'musket caps' and are several times larger than #11. Most muzzleloaders use #11 caps which are small, about 4mm in diameter. 209 is simply a shotgun primer. I just bought a Thompson Contender muzzleloader which uses 209 primers. They tend to be the most reliable of the three commonly available primers for muzzleloaders. I have a Ruger M77/50 muzzleloader that I still can't get to be 100% reliable with a #11 or #10 cap. You can change the type of cap it uses with a conversion kit. I recently bought a 209 kit for it so we'll see if it is 100% reliable. Your pistol likely takes #10's. |
Sorry, I thought #10's were musket caps. But even the #11's were too big so maybe he should still try the musket caps. Damn, I can't imagine a smaller cap than #11's. They're already small to begin with. |
| I on occasion get some slightly oversize Nipples. They have only been a few thousanths over and I usually take some emery cloth and lightly sand them with the cloth. I like to have my caps really snug so that I have to seat them with my thumb anyways so this usually works out well. I have also found that the #11 (RWS I think) German cap if I recall runs a little more snug than the CCI #11. |

#11, musket caps and 209 primers each have specificaly designed nipples/breach plugs. To change from a #11 to a 209 you would have to replace your breach plug designed for #11s and replace it with one designed for 209 primers. In adition the striker/hammer for a #11 is flat and would have to be changed to the firing pin type used to strike the center of the 209 primer. I don't think you are going to find any conversion nipples to accomodate anything else for a hand gun. |
