I have a WW1 1917 shell that was used by the Czechs post war and there is not a stripper that I tried that would touch it. Even blasting it is a struggle!!! However one of my norwegians came really clean with citristrip so it may work on yours too. View Quote Any suggestions on aging the helmet a bit? I don’t want to make it look 75 years old, but I don’t want it to look new either. |
|
When I used to reenact I just took a new one and threw out out in the dirt, smeared it with mud, let it sit oustide for a couple of weeks and so on. I was looking more for a used look though as opposed to an "old" look.

I just got my liner in and it doesn't fit.
It's looking like IMA sent me a 64 shell. |
|
If you measure around the outside in line with the rivet holes it will let you know .
|
|
|
What doesn't fit? The aluminum band in the shell or the finger slicing leather part?
|
|
|
Thats odd, maybe they sent you one for a 68? I have had a few be really tight though. Do you have a picture of how it sits?
Whats the size number stamped on the leather part? |

Yep sounds like it. Wonder if its too late for you to swap it out?
On a lighter note most of the other 64's I've seen from this bunch were German shells, so it might be worth it to check the inner room (might have to lose some paint) for maker and lot markings. |

Shell is painted, just waiting on the replacement liner.
Debating wether to actually use the decals or not. Potato pic. Attached File |

Thanks, I tried to get a good texture with the paint by holding the can 2-3 feet away and dusting it. It turned out pretty good but has a little more gloss than I’d prefer.

Behold: liner and dirty bird installed.
Need to seal the decal. ETA: not really happy with the decal to be honest, may take it off. Attached File |

Why? It looks good! What do you think factory fresh luft helmets looked like? As you discussed, you can weather it a bit and tone it down....I like single decals myself, no decals are meh, although I own a few, but I like my single decals the best.... After I posted the pic, I realized that the placement was slightly off. It bothers me. View Quote ETA Seriously, I've seen some pretty fucked up decal placement on real ones....Germans didn't scrap them because the decal guy at the plant had too much schnapps the night before... Oh, and before you seal it if you leave it on, let it dry a good couple of days, any moisture still under the decal will bubble up...the German basically used varnish to seal them in most cases... |
|
If it bothers you change it, but it looks great to me. I am going to do this now, thanks OP.

A young man who does WW2 reenacting recently put up a video on youtube detailing his conversion of a Finn M55 to a more "German" appearance. It's not his best video (he struggles a little taking the helmet apart in the beginning), but it is informative. Watching his other videos, it's apparent he is very knowledgeable regarding German equipment and gear of the era.
Channel name is " panzersoldat1 ". |

Although not through and through German, IMA has Finnish M40 (M40/55) helmets for $50. They are practically the same as German helmets, just made after the war for the Finns and painted a different color. I can't speak to the liner though. IMAs website does a good job describing their history. Finnish Contract M40's I've been thinking about picking one up since it's cheap enough, and possibly turning it into a replica Wehrmacht M40 as a placeholder. I went for two of these. Most of them machined on Nazi era Germany technology, cheapest way to go https://farm1.staticflickr.com/975/42197587542_e27bcaebc1_h.jpg WWII Stuff Filtered by SoloDallas, on Flickr ETA fuck I shoulda read deeper into the thread sorry OP! View Quote |

I need a way to display these things without spending $200, what are some good options?
I have three helmets total, and intend to add at least two more. |

I like the potato masher repro from IMA on sale and a cheap base from hobby lobby stained dark.

I have a couple of German helmets that my grandfather grabbed from bunkers after the Germans left. Didn't know they are so expensive, maybe not in Europe.
One still has the name 'Werner' painted on the inner side of the neckshield |

All the helmets look like repro's to me, and not even good ones...I wouldn't pay much...

I finally got around to buying that actual German helmet, got an M42.
They still have one M42, and some M40s if anyone's interested. Bunch of other stuff too. https://www.atthefront.com/category-s/12.htm |

For the next project in the series, I found this:
Attached File Someone gave it to me a long time ago, and I forgot I had it. Rear seam, some dents, a split at the rear, no chin straps, no liner. Trying to decide what to do with it, salvaging it would be nice, but I don't really want to mess with cork. |

Came across an M35 Luftwaffe helmet for $500 this weekend. Very worn finish and incomplete liner. Passed because it seemed like too much money for something to gather dust in the closet.
