So took my M1 carbine to range 2 weeks ago

Groupings were ok but I wasn't shoot for accuracy. was actually pleased.

Took home rifle and put it in safe. weeks go by and I pull out rifle to admire it.

first thing I notice is there is a dove tail where my rear sight assembly should be... instant WTF moment

I am totally at loss how it happened. Called m ybuddy and asked him if he had any clue what could have caused it and if he may have found  strange assembly lying in his truck.

anyone else have this issue with M1 carbines?.

Not unheard of with Carbines, especially with the stamped rear sight assembly. You'll need to stake the sight in to keep it from falling out.

I went to shoot my dad's M1 carbine (I sadly don't have 1) and the rear sight was missing or fell off, I don't remember exactly.

I noticed mine was loose when shooting it for the first time.  I took it home and re-staked it in the original spot.  That was many years ago and I haven't shot it since.  I need to get it out and shoot it again, its a nice Saginaw SG.

I keep forgetting to look but I believe the M1 carbine rear sight should be a one-way on/off type of deal. The base is slightly tapered, something like 8-10 thousandths, so it snugs up centered and then was staked. It's possible to drive it out the wrong way but you wind up with a loose, sloppy sight when you put it back on. If this happened during a refurb, and it didn't get a good stake, I can see it getting knocked loose.

I had the same thing happen with one of mine, fortunately I found the sight.   When I put it back it was extremely loose in the dovetail.  I removed it again, and used a large punch to slightly bend the edge of the dovetail down so it was a tight fit.  After it was reinstalled, I staked it for extra security also.

If you try and drive off the wrong way you more than likey get a broken/cracked dovetail on the receiver. There is actually a tool that presses the sight on and off.
