Hey guys, need help.  What can you tell me about this Gew 98. Spent a few hours researching the interweb and didn't turn up much specific to this maker, year, and markings.  Father gifted me this from the family "pass down" and want to see if the story checks out.

Thanks in advance!

Well as you see it was made in 1917 by JP Sauer and was made for the German military during WW1. Stock seems to be the proper late  style with finger grooves and bolt take down washer. Missing the cleaning rod. As a plus you got a 1917 US sling, not correct for the rifle but cool anyway.  The receiver and bolt were left non finished and should be bright natural steel and the barrel should be blued. All,repeat, all parts should be numbered and have at least the last 2 numbers of the receiver and barrel serial number.
Nice rifle.
How is the bore.
Should be 8x57 Mauser cal.

It looks GTG from your pics. Just check for matching serial numbers. It make a huge difference in what it's worth.

OEM cleaning rods are available. Probably have to go with a repro sling as OEM slings are priced to the moon these days. The last good complete one I saw went for near $300.00.

If that is a M1917 length nobuckle sling (they came in three lengths) it's worth about $150.00 by itself.

Thanks guys, appreciate it.

Bore is in great shape.  Unfortunately, part of the bolt isn't matching sn.

I did take the sling off and ordered a repro, plus I scored an oem cleaning rod.
