I was wondering whether its more acceptable to add the missing pieces (cleaning rod, capture screws, and sight hood) or to leave these in the condition that the Russian's put them in. I guess its easy to remove those parts anyways to get it back to "original RC status."
Also, anyone have a recent one from the Widener's site so I can know what to expect when mine is delivered? |

up to you. But it should be said not all were fitted with hoods. That provision to the front sight started in the 1940s. Prewar/early war didn't have them. Correct. The front sight hood and modified front sight base was authorized in December 1939. They didn't start showing up until mid-1940, and weren't universal until early 1941ish. So if your K98k is dated 1939 or earlier, it won't have provisions for a front sight hood. And if it's dated 1940 or 1941, it may or may not have these provisions. |

Unless the early receiver was later rebarreled by the Germans. I had a RC just like that before. to the original poster, do as you wish, I add these things to all of my K98s. But keep in mind there are good repros, bad repros. bad repro sight hoods dont have much tension to them and rattle on the front sight, and you can still find original sight hoods for sale. I personally put originals on my guns when I can find them. There are also good repro slings and crappy ones as well. If you're going to buy an RC for a shooter, the biggest thing I would suggest is bore condition. I didnt know much about K98s when I got my first RC and the bore was garbage. definitely not worth it as a shooter. |
| Ya bore condition is important. A few other forums I peruse had people discussing this batch from widener's. One of them called them up to ask about bore condition and they said they were good to go once the cosmo is pushed out. If the barrels are still cosmolined, likely they were refurb's that were never unboxed. |
