Is there a difference in rarity, value, and desirability between an early war vs late war style Gew 98? Any major difference in quality? Most period photos I've seen show the early type; were more of those made, even though the switch was half way through the war? I'm trying to decide on a good representative of the type and choosing between a couple rifles in similar condition. Thanks in advance.

If condition was the same I'd get one with a unit marked ID disk but always go for overall and bore condition/matching numbers first.
BTW....Always check the firing pin to see if it's broke or if it matches. I've seen more than my share of Gew98s with broken/replaced firing pins. I have a '16 Amberg in great shape but the FP was replaced. |

If either have the receiver still in the white go with that one. That would be original for a Spandau. Both are in the white, one slightly brighter than the other. The main difference is the style of stocks. Not sure about matching numbers on both, need to check. |
