Got my first Chinese sks, it doesn't have the factory mag, it's got a 30 round p-mag. I put some rounds in to see how it cycles but it doesn't unless you hold tight on the bottom of the mag and push it up into the mag well. What can I do to fix this? Pics to follow here.

Gas piston looks rusted should I be concerned?

Here it is all tore down for its first initial clean up, the beast was dirty!

See where the mag is getting hit?

See where the bullet tip is getting hit?

After clean up!

I would buy a factory 10rnd fixed mag and be done with it. You can also buy a new piston, they are all available.

My recommendation would be to try getting an original 10 round box mag back into it. Those aftermarket mags never really seem to fit right to me unless you do a lot of fitting and smoothing work to operate properly. By getting an original 10 round box (I think they're relatively cheap) from one of the multiple sources out there - Numrich, Sarco, etc, you can check and see if you have proper orientation and fit. If that solves your problem and you want to put the 30 round mag back on, check and see the differences between spacing on the original vs. the 30 rounder and (eek) mod to fit. HTH.

I am going to get a new piston for sure. Can anyone tell me more about it? Like what type is it because I don't see much writing or numbers on it anywhere

Another option besides the original factory 10 rounders is that they made 20 round fixes mags too.  They aren't as easy to find, but unlike the 3rd party detachable mags the milsurp 20 round fixes ones seem to be as completely reliable as the original 10 rounders.

Just got one of the Classic Firearms SKS. IMHO, replace the piston, put a 10 rd mag and get the bayonet and cleaning rod back on that sucker and shoot the hell ot of it

The 20rnd mags were commercial and no where near as reliable as the factory 10rnd mag. Tried them and would never go back.

This.  I've yet to encounter an aftermarket mag in an SKS that is reliable.

Seems like the concensus is, any external mag blows on the sks lol

Pretty much, yeah. I've owned multiple SKSs in the past, including a Yugo, a Romanian, an honest to God Russian and ChiComs. I tried the 30 rounders on the Yugo and the ChiCom and never had any real success - in fact, on the Yugo I just gave up ever trying to ever really fit it because it was that bad. The ChiCom wasn't terrible, but it did have feeding issues and never really sat right. Now that I've aged a bit more, I've found that I really like the original look of the SKS and I don't actually "need" 30 rounds in a mag for it. I've also pared down my SKS collection to a single ChiCom as well. Dang. Should've thought that one through some more.

The one that I have has the Chinese star emblem on it and is made exactly like the original mag except for being larger.  I bought it at the same time I bought the SKS around 1989-1990.  It is nothing like the typical commercial SKS mags and has never jammed on me once even when feeding it the cheapest Chinese and Russian ammo I could find...

I don't doubt there were probably commercial copies of the Chinese 20 round mags that weren't as good though...

I have owned the 20rnd mags with the star on them too and they still don't work properly YMMV.

Take capitalist magazine of swindle, throw down range and use for target.  Then buy proper magazine made by triumphant Soviet workers.

Is simple..  You read my post and you learn.

This post made me laugh this morning, thank you.  And yes, my opinion FWIW, is also to keep the standard SKS magazine in place and all should run smoothly.  I have a Russian and I love it.  I had two Norincos and sold them...nothing wrong with them, but the Russian is nicer fit/finish (gotta love that dark Russkie wood too).  Now if I could only find an Albanian that didn't cost a fortune or look like it had been drug through lower Sloboviakhastan behind an ox cart.
