I know, I know....sacrilage and if it was my own, I'd never do it!
A friend of mine just got a 91/30 as a gift from his father in law. He brought it over and we took it for a test ride. Typical Mosin accuracy - about 4" or so and I told him it probably won't get better without sinking a lot of money, time and effort into it. He wants to use it to take a deer or 2 this season. He is definitely not a "gun" guy and really wants a scope mounted. I explained that a scout scope would be the fastest, cheapest and easiest solution... After doing a lot of reading and searching, I've come to the conclusion that all the scout scope mounts are shit. Am I correct? Are there any that are worth while? Any advise would be appreciated... |

If you have a Mosin that's shooting only 4" groups, why would a scope make that better? Sounds like a gun that needs attention, elsewhere, before even thinking of putting a scope on it. Four inches is not "typical" in my experience, but for the guns that have shot that poorly, I was able to improve them (providing the bore wasn't a sewer pipe) for little/no cost and just a little bit of experimentation. Putting a scope on it would be like buying new tires for the car that sits in your front yard with no engine. |

That said, I'm no sniper

As it's a 91/30 - round receiver, correct? Have it drilled & tapped, & put a proper mount on it, have the handle bent down, clean the crud out of the trigger bits, throw a cheap Chinese 3-9x or 4x scope on it for a start. Check the crown as well. Recrown as necessary - someone on here just chopped a 1/4" of bbl off & started over.
It's a $100 rifle, can become a decent rifle for another $100, so you're in for $200 but have a $100 head start. If it's a hex receiver, pull the receiver out of the stock & check the tang date, he might've gotten lucky. Anything before 1899 is antique & not legally a firearm under Federal law. If you do scope it, then start thinking about floating or shimming that bbl, if you use good ammo it should do much better than 4 moa. |
