I ordered this on a whim from Dans Ammo. I know nothing about these guns but all the numbers match that I can tell, even the # on the box.  I am very happy with the purchase. Any input would be appreciated.

These are usually West German police pistols.
There are usually stamps that indicate which German city or state they were used by and many times the stamp will be defaced or milled off.

Condition usually ranges from well used-mostly carried not shot, to like new.  Random holsters were often just put in with the gun, so it's not unusual to see a like new gun with a very well worn holster, or a like new holster with a well used gun.

These make excellent shooters.

Guns marked P1 were West German military issue.
P-38 marked guns were West German police or were made for the commercial market.

Police Gun.

Don't shoot +P or M882 ammo in it.

This, especially since your pistol does not have the reinforcing pin in the frame.

Stick with 115 grain FMJ ammo, and absolutely no +P.

Pin has nothing to do with it, The pin is only there to provide a steel cam surface for locking block not to make frame stronger . The hex pin actually makes the frame weaker and prone to cracking on right side through to the trigger bar cut.

These post war P-38's are prone to cracking slides, that is why later P1's have thicker slides. It is just in your best interest to not shoot +P or M822 through either a postwar P38 or P1

The P38s are great guns. The left side ejection does take some getting used to though.

Nice little pistol.
I have a P1 - it looks rather similar - to which I changed the grips with replica WWII grips.

Never liked the P1/later P38 grips much.

Great score!
