So I just picked up my first Mosin from AIM Surplus, and its awesome. Being my first rifle of this age, I have a few questions for the guru's.

Is there anything I should watch out for when it comes to cleaning and maintenance?
Is there anything I should or should not use to clean the rifle?
And what is the most ideal size brush I should use to clean the bore?

I plan on doing a full cleaning and inspection before I shoot it, so if you guys have any tips that would be great. Thanks guys.

And yes, I'll post pictures soon.

Cosmoline..... It will be every where....
I recommend a full cleaning before you shoot it, it is not uncommon to be scooping cosmoline out of mosins. Mineral spirits will do wonders but your going to have a lot of work cut out for you. Over all cleaning and care, just remember that the barrel is not lined with anything so if you shoot corrosive surplus you want to clean the barrel with in 24 hours but the sooner the better. Windex, Boiling water, or the Hopes for corrosive all work well for cleaning your barrel after firing corrosive ammo. The bore is .311" and in most cases a standard 30 cal brush and patch holder will work fine. I would recommend however that you get a Mosin tool if your don't come with one as you use it to check your firing pin extrusion, also it makes bolt disassemble much easier. And don't freak out when the bolt falls apart after you remove it, that is normal.

After you get your initial cleaning and inspection done, take a handful of Q-tips to the range with you when you shoot next. After putting ~10 rounds down range, the bore will be nice and warm, so open it up and remove the bolt. Take your Q-tips and use them to get in the nooks and crannies inside of the chamber as the cosmoline in there will now be liquidish. This has helped me a LOT in the past. Also keep in mind of the corrosive ammo - you need to clean your rifle (I say ASAP) soon after you're done at the range. After many discussions about this in the past and a lot of reading, I personally take a small bottle of soapy water with me to the range, and when I'm done shooting the Mosin(s), I'll pour it down the barrel and take a few dry patches and run them through, then follow with a single patch with regular Hoppes gun oil and run that through. That's good enough for me until I get home and can take the time to fully clean.

Mitch, I've been right up to the edge of buying a Mosin Nagant but never took the step.  I saw the AIM rifles last week and it got my blood flowing again.  I know you just got it, but what can you tell us about it?  State of the bore?  Numbers match?  Stock in decent shape?  And yes, plz post pics!

Buy and use a headspace gage before you fire the first shot.  Its cheap insurance.

if this rifle was through the mill i would agree.. but out of all the mosin nagants ive handled only one has had headspace issues.

All these rifles from AIm, and classic etc have gone through an arsenal and put into long term storage before shipping to the states.

IMO it is not needed. I have guage set, nice to have... if you are getting into collecting of used, worn 91/30s. But if you have only one and its been through an arsenal.. not worth the expense, One last thing.. make sure you get that cosmoline out of the chamber , bore with some good ol mineral spirits (break the rifle down first). Oil it hoppes 9 it and take it to the range and have some fun.

The stock appears to be in really good condition. No cracks or major blemishes or dings and dents. The bolt looks spotless and the action is fairly smooth. The rifling looks like it is in good condition, but it seemed pretty dirty. The numbers all match, except for the bayonet. All in all I am very pleased with this rifle. I will post pictures later today when I get home from work.

Check the firing pin protrusion with the supplied tool. I would  do this before firing!   Since the 7.62 Russ is a "rimmed round" you are less likely to see headspace issues. Most people shoot these Mosin Nagant surplus guns without checking them with a headspace gage.
The likehood of excess headspace is very slim with the M-N Rifle

Here are some photo's guys.  Yes, the bolt is not included in the photos, I'll get some photo's of that later.  In the last photo, does anyone know if that is rust or just cosmoline?

Can't speak for the OP's rifle, but I just bought 2 from a guy here locally that bought a crate of them.  He wanted the crate to make a table and was selling off the rifles.  Anyway, the rifles are great.  Stocks are good, a few minor dings and small scratches, but in good shape.  Metal is good, mine had a few rough looking tooling marks on the receiver, but I think that's because the Russians were working hard to punch them out during the war.  Bore is good.  Dirty, but crisp rifling.  I've run a few patches through it and got some crud out.
All numbers matched on both, including matching bayonets.
I think if you've ever considered one, go ahead and get one.

To spec is pretty relative with these guns, but I've had good luck buying from Buymilsurp.com.

Looks to be unrefurbished in a correct pre-war stock. Good find!

If I'm not mistaken, the diamond mark in the second pic is a refurb mark.
