How would I go about getting the age?  Where would I go to get a bolt?

Thanks

Check that sling to see if it has a WW-1 or 2 date on it. If it's sound (and can be cleaned) you might get your $$$ back and then some on the rifle. Wartime M1907 slings go for good money on EBay.

Check Springfield Sporters to see if they have any #4 bolts/stock sets.

The sling is dry rotted ...   Broke as I bent it back!

I just ordered a bayonet and sling from Liberty Tree. It seems that they have a good selection pf parts, though their list prices are higher than Springfield Sporters.

If it isn't dated, it's late '43 or '44. Based on your serial I'd say late '43. Savage stopped dating receivers at that point.

Check with Springfield Sporters for a bolt assembly. That Savage #4mk1* is a '43-'44 by the serial number as MJvolkJ said. You should be able to get the proper stock pieces to restore it. At least the front sight has not been cut off. Another possible source is Numrich's.

As others have said, Springfield Sporters are your best bet for parts. Everything I got from them is brand new condition. IIRC for 50% more you can pic the manufacturer of the parts, so your front sight protectors, front and rear bands can be all savage marked as well if you want them to.

Here's my savage that has a serial # not too far off of yours

Also, when you get a bolt, get a headspace gauge. Order the bolt heads from Springfield and ask for savage parts (they're sure to be for your rifle as it and the long-branch have the simple bolt release notch, and you won't have problems some have reported hurting the reciever using the other type of bolt head. The heads are marked on them with numbers, the shortest being 0 and the longest 3 iirc, they did this so that if headspace opened up, and armorer at unit level could bring it back in spec simply by putting the next longer head on the bolt, thus tightening the headspace. All you have to do (I've done it) is try the heads until one gives desirable headspace, and you're done. If none of them do (I doubt that will be the case) you have bigger problems.
