A friend at work was telling me about his SVT 40 and told how much they were going for. I joked and said I would give him $500 for it and next I know I'm buying it. It's a '42 Tula  still in cosmo.

Nice find. It looks to be wearing an AVT stock and muzzle break as well as well. Pretty rare. Out of curiosity does it have the grooves cut in the reciever for a scope mount?

I'm all over the place with this find.

And to answer 'littlebobby'  there are no scope grooves. Also has anybody seen a large crossbolt like mine? what's up with that?

Nice price and that cross bolt is interesting. Makes sense as they can crack stocks from recoil, but I have not come across one with that cross bolt.

I just joined Gunboards back in the summer, I can normally get more in depth C&R info than I can here.

Yeah, I've been on surplusrifle for a long time now, between there, gunboards, and here, I got a good mix.

Ees good price for Union of Socialist American republics.  But over here Tokarev SVT is 389 roubles.

Good honest rifle triumph of workers and pride of mighty Red Army.  Good work, comrade

Thank you and thank everyone else although the may not be as good as I thought with the stock mods but oh well she's a shooter.

From what I can tell from the pictures you have what appears to be a converted AVT-40. The AVT was a fully automatic version of the SVT primarily intented to be used for anti- aircraft use ( optimistic for sure) and as a squad automatic weapon . The tell tale signs of an AVT are the stock and muzzle break. The stocks on the AVT-40's were much thicker to stand up to the automatic fire as well as to give the shooter a thicker stock to hang on to this is also why it has the enlarged cross bolt behind the reciever. Your stock also appears to have a large cerrilic A on it, im not 100% but I think that was to designate the difference, every AVT I have seen pics of had that marking. There is also two cut outs on your stock for the safty, push the safty to the left is semi-auto and to the right is full auto. Regular svt's only have one cut out on the left side of the gun. Overall what you have there is alot more uncommon that what you may think.

They said the crossbolt wasn't right and the side sling swivel was Chinese. Regardless, for 500 I still like it. Thinking of replacing the bolt with a Mosin as they are exactly the same size.

SWEET! A great piece to add to your collection, considering this is even more rare than the SVT40.

That muzzle brake is pure AVT-40.

Figured I would throw in here too, the 12 slot is a '41, the 4 slot is a '43

I know I have the cleaning rod for the '41 somewhere, but I think I may have to order a new one incase it got permanently lost

Wow is that wrist crossbolt for a crack repair? Regardless, can I see a closeup of the crossbolt because I'm changing mine out.

Awesome find for a great price but I'm curious, I could be wrong but its my understanding that any firearm that was once full auto is considered by the ATF to forever be full auto and requires NFA paperwork to own legally. If it is a converted AVT than doesn't this rifle fall into the category as all those semi auto converted M-14's that the CMP could never sell because they were once full auto?
12/11/2012 5:11:10 PM EDT
[#27]
The gun itself was never fully auto. It's stock had been replaced during the refurb with an AVT stock made for the full auto version.

[#28]
Ok, that explains it.

Not FA or a convert.
Easy way to tell is if the safety folds all the way to the right.

My 1941 has the same brake and stock cutout, minus the crossbolt thingy. No happy switch either...

After days of not checking in I just seen your pics. Thank you so much. Doubtful I will find a bolt like that but I'm still considering a Mosin bolt. Anything will look better than what's in it now.  Matter of fact yours is the first I've seen with a wrist bolt other than mine.
