I've been wanting one for awhile and finally found one for sale locally. I don't know much about K98s yet but I like the gun, it has character. Total mixmaster. Stock is solid, has a cool buttstock repair. Nazi markings are intact. Lots of pitting above the woodline but below it looks great. Bore looks decent, like your typical Russian surplus. Action is pretty rough, maybe because of all the pitting. It also came with a bunch of Ecuadorian 8mm. I still need to give it a good cleaning. Could anyone point me to some good sites on K98s?

Capture/refurb mark? Looks like the Tula star.....

Welcome to the Kar 98k CLUB! I love mine! Which is also a RC, but i removed the mess of the Shellac job, and truoiled

As for yours...Yep its a Russian Capture... X on the side of the receiver. Also looked like that rifle went through hell and back and the ruskys just blued on top of it.  Another hint is The shallac finish.. ( the Germans  finish was BLO ) How much did it cost you if you dont mind me asking..

Soviet Capture
During World War II, the Soviet Union captured millions of Mauser Karabiner 98k rifles and re-furbished them in various arms factories in the late 1940s and early 1950s. These rifles were originally stored in the event of future hostilities with the Western Bloc. These rifles, referred to by collectors as RC ("Russian Capture") Mausers, can be identified by a crude "X" stamp on the left side of the receiver, the dull, thick reblueing and mismatched parts and electro-pencil serial numbers on smaller parts. The Soviet arsenals made no effort to match the rifle's original parts by serial number when reassembling them, and some parts (the cleaning rod, sight hood, and locking screws) were deemed unnecessary and melted down for scrap metal.

Thanks for the link

I gave 250 for the rifle and 50 for around 400 rounds of ammo. I have no idea what these rifles are worth but I figured I couldn't lose too much on the deal.

Well 50$ for 400rds is a steal.. well if its Romanian/Yugo. not sure of Ecuadorian it was all gone on the market when i get into the 8mm stuff.. But if the ammo turns out to be fine (no hang fires ect) I think you did just fine as long as the rifle functions to your satisfaction.

I havnt seen a RC that rough before (metal wise).

But prices of 98s keep going sky ward year after year. A good RC now runs from 350-400 now. Non RC all matching 98k goes 900+

wow that thing is rough. as long as the pitting isn't bad and the barrel is clean, should be go to go. not a bad price considering.

that ammo looks like early 40's turkish, which is nice and hot, pretty damn close to german specs.

gunboards.com k98 forum is a well of knowledge on these.

+1 for gunboards a true wealth of info in the k98k. Those guys over there have everything covered. I picked one of these up as well and the gunboards stock beding tutorial had mine shooting point of aim. My rifle before the bedding was shooting minute of truck tire before and now i can get 3-4 inch groups a 100 yards

Looks like a good deal. They sure didn't care about bluing over pitting, did they? Still, $250 for any intact K98k is decent these days...

I agree completely.  The Russians - they would shellac or reblue anything they could.
Honestly you did great at 250 for it.  If you would tear it totally down and sell the individual parts, it would be worth way more than that!  Right now RC k98s in better shape are going for 400-550.  The market seems to have gotten slim on them, so they are harder to come by.  ClassicArms has been getting and listing groups of K98s that are not X-ed russian captures, but appear to be captured rifles of some kind, and they are commanding 500-600 each.

$250 for a R/C is a good deal.  There was a guy at a gunshow I went to on Sunday who had an all "correct" mauser and he wanted $1400.  Too high, but you get the picture.  These things are going up in price.  What is that on the receiver?  Is it pitting or cosmoline?

Looking at the reciever side shot, and see how wore the eagle is due to the pits, me thinks its pitting not cosmo

Good price on an RC, even with some pitting. Go shoot her!

The pitting really isn't all that bad, merely superficial. My camera makes it look alot worse than it really is. I've seen Mosin Nagants that had 10x worse pitting on the barrel/receiver. It is a bit odd that the entire receiver has that pitting all over it, inside and out.

Wonder if it was covered in blood?

did not think of that, but i'd bet it being top down in the snow is more likely.
