Found an 1898 Krag Springfield rifle on a local trade board.  Ad states it was stored in a barn for a very long time and is pretty rusty.  The serial number is visible and is 431706.  By the only pic of it, it appears all there and intact.  No cut wood or barrel.  Pretty much just rusty.  He is asking $150 or best offer.  I only want one for history's sake, not to shoot.  The way the ad reads, if I threw a $100 bill at him he would probably take it.  If he can read the serial number, I'm thinking it's probably not all that bad.  If I have to go to $150 is it worth it?

Soak the individual parts for 4 days in regular Vinegar from the supermarket. It will remove the rust without damaging the steel further. Kroil can also be used to lift surface rust by soaking overnight and then using Bronze Wool or the finest grade steel wool to remove the loosened rust. The idea is to go slowly and carefully, dont rush it. Even though Krag receivers were case hardened you wont bring that back it will be normal steel grey.

Find out what type rear sight your have as the Krag had several different models in the later production runs. CMP has new barrels also.

Yes, buy it.  Do not soak it in vinegar, it will remove bluing.  just use CLP or oil and 0000 or 000 steel wool and gently rub the rust.

I'd buy it for the stock, haha. I need a full length. It's going to be a project but a very fun one. Post pics eventually!

Looks like he got lots of responses on it and is going to "take the highest offer."  I 'm not bothering.
