| From the pics it looks like u have a matching bolt, check the rear sight, floorplate and barrel bands for serial#. Take the stock off the action and look in the barrel channel too. The handguard and the stock should be serialized. If the numbers match u got a steal! |

can you get a clearer pic of the serial number. there should also be a letter under or near it. it appears to be late 44 and there won't be many serialized parts on it. that berrel is also suspect as it has a "2" on it and typically, you will see "7.2x" on the barrel at the top right where the barrel meets the receiver. that also is not the correct stock, or it's been modified with the finger grooves. looks like an isreali stock. if that is the case, i'd say you might have overpaid, BUT, not by a whole lot. say about a 100 or less. also....as if you wanted to hear more.......that front barrel band is incorrect for that block, which appears to me as an "l". |

That H stock band is an earlier design and should have a serial number on it (which wouldnt match your rifle). The appropriate band for your rifle most likely would have been a solid stamped band. Maybe with a serial number or not. Take the bolt apart and check for numbers on the firing pin, etc. I have a late 44 byf also and everything's stamped with few serial numbers. The bolt parts (and internals) are numbered though.
ooops. Edited to say that I take back the above statement. Backbone of the Wehrmacht states the upper band should be milled and closed and the lower band milled. |

Thanks for all the info.. Kinda bummed that it is not all original but I plan on putting the correct barrel band and trying to find an un serial numbered stock. Does anybody have a source for those? I am looking at gunbroker aswell. Don't be bumed. Russian captures are selling for $300 or more. You have a non-import with matching bolt. I would much rather have yours and pay a couple hundred more than have a Russian capture. |

I wouldn't rush off and start trying to make it " right " just yet. Can you take some better pics of the recvr markings ? Your pics are too dark to see much detail.
It may be a as used Isreali 7.92 Mauser, they did import some pre 68 that didn't get converted to 7.62 Nato. look for Isreali proofs on recvr. Since the recvr and barreled action are so much nicer than the stock and stock metal it could just be someones restoration of a once nice 98k that fell to bubba.... |

I'm not an expert but if it were Israeli, would they have not punched the swastikas? I have what I think is a russian capture, and that is what they did. |

from my computer i think the metal has been reblued.
im guessing it was a sporterized rifle "restored" with an Israeli stock. if thats the case, then no, the swastikas wouldnt have been peened. Ive seen "captured" K98s of all locations slip by with the swastikas still present. |
