| Depending on the content of the letter AIM sent you, that should be the proof. The story I hear is an individual asked the ATF to make all P38s and P1s C&R. When the request was approved they sent a letter to the requester stating as such. It doesn't matter who made the request, the approval covers all firearms falling into the group approved. I haven't seen a copy of the letter, do you have a way to post it here? |

Because the Model P1 is a continuation of a military service issue firearm, it is grandfathered into the C&R status regardless of the actual date of manufacture.
Walther P1 Model designated P38 pistols began manufacture in 1963. M1 Garand rifles were manufactured up to 1957 and rebuilt all the way in to the 1980s and each and every one that has NOT been rebuilt outside the confines of military service and issue use is still considered C&R. Commercial versions of the Walther P38 regardless of caliber and regardless of whether they were issued to a military entity and manufactured after 1961 are NOT considered C&R eligible. The Model P1 IS a Military service issue firearm and retains C&R status because of that fact. Mosin Nagant 91/30 and Czech M59 Sniper rifles were built from bare receivers and rebuilt as Sniper rifles well into the 1960s and hold C&R status for the same reasons. Your local Hawaii BATFE should be able to letterhead this fact for you. |
