I'm new to mosin's and today was pretty much my first day shooting it. I'm having trouble with the ammo feeding. When I rack the bolt somtimes the next round doesn't want to feed. Hit the bolt, mess and fiddle with it for a while and sometimes I'd get it to go and sometimes I had to fish it back out. The round would act like it was trying to push down the nose of it rather than feeding. It was a reocurring problem in only about 20 rounds.
What am I doing wrong? Am I loading it wrong? The ammo was the Romanian silvertip from AIM. |

What condition is the rifle in? (ie. rearsenaled and like new or well broken in) Have you cleaned all the cosmo out of it. Are the rounds that are nose diving showing any scratches lengthwise in the cases from the feed lips of the magazine area? Can you feel any burrs in the feed area?
Are you somehow loading the rim of the cartridge from above behind the rim of the cartridge below? |

The gun is a rearsenal. I got it from Cabela's about 3 weeks ago. Looks like new. I'm pretty confident I got all the cosmo out of it too.
I will have to watch the rim of the case when I'm loading. I wasn't paying attention to that but was trying to make sure they sat at the back of the magazine. That could be it. I didn't notice any scratches either but will have to make double sure next time. I noticed that the first round in a full mag was typically the culprit but not always. |

i have shot mosin nagants that seemed to have weak mag springs, that werent pushing the rounds up hard enough for the bolt to catch them. could this be your issue ? I don't think so. There seems to be a 2 stage loading to it where you can push the rounds down past where the bolt will catch them. Once you rack the bolt once though it pops the next on up and the bolt definately pushes on it, it just doesn't feed. I'm gonna try reloading the mag tommorow and pay close attention to the case rims and see if I can replicate it. This seems to be the most logical explanation so far. |
| This has happened to my a few times too. Not sure why but sometimes it seems that the bolt pushes the round forward and down a bit, causing the nose to catch on the ramp? I'm at work so I'm having a hard time picturing exactly what happens. I think I usually just throw another round in. |
| Palming the back of the bolt forward works for me. The rims are tapered to allow them to ride over another rim but some times they need some coaxing. I generally give the back of the bolt a short rap to hop a rim, then push the round into the chamber normally with the bolt handle. |
