I just noticed that the finish is flaking off of the stock.  I'm not looking to refinish it, I just want to preserve it as is.  Any tips on how to get the finish to re-adhere?

I remember reading something about lightly rubbing the stock with a mixture of denatured alcohol and a little shellac but I can't remember where I saw it...

Thanks for the help.

I've stripped some of mine with denatured alcohol and then applied new shellac.  If you want the red shellac like the Russians use you can get the flakes and dissolve them in denatured alcohol a few days prior to applying it.  If you want to keep it original and not destroy the rifle, don't sand it, just wipe the old finish off.  You can look here for one place to get flakes.
Garnet is pretty close.  flakes

Here is how to cut it:  cut

ETA: If you rub it with denatured alcohol to smooth it or repair it your only thinning or removing the finish.  Eventually you need to refinish it.

I find it ironic that there is an article on shellac on a website called fine woodworking.

Thanks for the help guys.  For now, I'm just going to wipe it down to try and halt the flaking for a while.  (Can anyone recommend a cut for this?  1/2lb?  1/4lb? )

If I have to refinish it in the future then so be it.  I'll deal with that when the time comes.

It is so easy and fun to refinish a MN stock you should do it just for the experience.

Yes, Denatured Alcohol and some 0000 Steel wool and a few rags is all you need to strip it.

The alcohol is the natural solvent for the shellac. I found that the amber shellac that Lowes carries is a good match.

Shellac is one of the easiest and forgiving finishes you will ever use.

You can refinish a stock in about 1/2 a day if you have a nice dry place to hang it in between coats

here is a pic of a stock I did

Once you buy a package of steel wool, a brush, the alcohol and shellac, you will have enough supplies to redo about 5 stocks
