What is the purpose of the thing sticking out at the top, im assuming its the gas cap(or something), but why does it have the pointy thing?
Ran across this while looking for a 44 pic, thought it might be worth a laugh to someone.

The same question was asked on another site. It was determined to be a stacking hook. It was for interlocking three or more rifles standing up at an encampment. The front sling type device on an M1 serves the same purpose.
