A guy I work with is selling a Chilean Mauser SN 761X I believe it said 1895 on it. It has a straight bolt and all the #'s I saw match. I don't believe the stock is orginal or it may have been modified. It does a have a steel butt plate, but the barrel which i guess to be ~20" was mostly exposed like a modern hunting rifle. He said he tried to put a 308 round in it but it wouldnt go, I believe it is 7x57 I have a round I will check it with. The metal appears to be in great condition, I am going to look down the bore if I decide to get it. He is asking $150 is this a reasonable price for this? I don't know much about these is there anything to look out for? If I buy it I will want to shoot it, along as it is safe. Thanks for any info.

It should have a band around the stock & end of the upper hand guard then just stock to near the end of the barrel.  A lot of them had the stock cut off at the end of the hand guard & the hand guard discarded by Bubba.

If the reciever is marked Modelo 1895 & shows to be made by "Loewe Berlin" and still chambered in 7x57 (or even in 7.65x53) and not altered in any other way, it is worth the $150.  Get it & start looking for the proper stock to get it back into collector condition.

It is definately shootable & doing so will not hurt it or its value as long as the proper cartridge is fired in it.  Just make bloody sure to have it checked so you don't feed it the wrong ammo.
