What's the opinion of these? I've heard the conversions are a gamble.

the 36 or 49/56?

the 36's had the stocks altered on them somehow and you will need to do some stock work to make sure the forearm doesn't crack

Very hit or miss.  Some of the 49/56 conversions work well, many do not.  Like a lot of Century conversions, they did it as cheaply as they could.  Chambers are typically pretty rough.  Another consideration is 308 runs at quite a bit more pressure than 7.5 French.  As far as the MAS 36 is concerned, yes, they buggered up the stocks.  As you shoot the thing, the forearm gradually works its way forward.

7.5 French ammo isn't that hard to find.  Stick with the original caliber.

Avoid them like the plague. Both the 49/56 and 36 conversions are utter, complete garbage. If you find one that actually works worth a damn, buy a lottery ticket. The 36 conversions generally work, but as the MAS-36 requires a good fit of the forearm to obtain any accuracy at all, you can expect the .308 MAS-36 conversions to shoot like shit.

Stay with the original 7.5. It's ballistically almost identical to 7.62 NATO/.308 and the Prvi ammo is excellent, clean, and readily available.
