Hey everyone. I've had my mosin nagant out twice now. What a great shooter, I'm hooked.
The only problem I'm having with it is sometimes it is not cocking.  I eject the casing, chamber new round, pull the trigger. Then click.  but if I pull the back of the bolt back it shoots fine.

I'm sure this has been covered over and over again. But couldnt find it so thanks for the help.

Have you taken it apart?  Most problems with these rifles is caused from dried Cosmoline inside the bolt or chamber.

When you say "then click", are the firing pin and cocking piece (at the rear of the bolt) actually moving forward?

I would agree that the first thing to check is that the bolt is clean, inside and out. Next would be the firing pin protrusion (if you got the little screwdriver type tool with it, you can use that to check it. If you don't know how, someone can explain it). Also, if the sear is not protruding far enough into the receiver, it will sometimes fail to catch the cocking piece when you close the bolt. However, if that is the case, there will be no "click", as it won't be cocked. With the rifle unloaded, cycle the bolt several times at varying speeds and see if the cocking piece stays to the rear each time.

Thanks for the replies.
I don't think its dirty/cosmo.  I've cleaned it very thoroughly as soon as a acquired it and after both times I've shot it.
I thought it might be a bolt/firing pin adjustment, however I dont know how to check that or what to do.

Follow this link and when you scroll about half way down, it shows you how to check the firing pin protrusion, using the Mosin bolt tool.

I don't have a tool.  Does anyone know the actual measurement?  I have looked a few places online and didn't find it, thanks.

The "go" notch on the tool measures 1.9mm on the one that I just grabbed. The "too long" notch is 2.45mm. So, if you have it protruding about 2mm, you should be good to go.

IM me your address and I'll send you a tool.

First things first, does the firing pin make an indentation on the primer when it clicks but doesn't detonate?

I really appreciate that.  My only Mosin so far is an M39 and it didn't come with a tool.  I intend to eventually get a 91/30 but it may be awhile, I keep blowing my money on higher priced rifles.
