I sent off my forms and the check has been cashed, which I assume to mean my license will be along in a couple of years or so.  For my first purchase I'd like to get something cheap, preferably $100 or less.  So far it seems the Nagants are a good choice for me.  Anything I should know about them or any other make/model for that matter?  I'm also thinking of going with AIM the first time out, so thoughts on vendors is appreciated, too.

I think a Mosin Nagant would be a good first purchase for someone getting into the C&R game this late, and especially since they can still be had for around the $100 mark and ammo is still available.

Having that said I wouldn't worry about specific models etc. I would just get my hands on one that has a really nice bore, possible matching #'s and no factory repairs etc. and a counter bore I would stay away from even though folks say they shoot just fine.

Last of all you cannot go wrong ordering anything from AIM, they are stand up folks and always take care of their customer. Make sure to post some pics of what you finally decide to buy.

For that price range, you're pretty much limited to either the Nagant, which is a fun revolver, but the ammo is pretty spendy. Or the Mosin 91/30. Ammo for the rifle is cheaper and you get more bang for your buck, in my opinion.

A Mosin from AIM would be a great start.

Since you're buying online, slurge and get the hand pick option if they have it.

Round receivers are OK, though a hex might be worth the few extra dollars too.

I know you said $100, but for a little more there are VZ24's and Enfields that are better collectors.

I have a '26 hex ex-dragoon Mosin and love it though, don't hesitate.

I also have the Nagant revolver. It is interesting, but unless you feel drawn to one I'm not sure I'd buy it... YMMV.

Long guns giv e satisfaction for sure. A CZ pistol might too though, but again you're looking $200+.

Budget is a bitch, but so is the C&R disease!

Also, check your local gun brokers when you get your license. You can find good deals and stil have them shipped directly to you (check your state laws of course).

Enjoy and welcome!

Another possibility is a Steyr M95.  Not sure who's still got them retail-wise, but they were available recently for around one bill.  Ammo's pricey, though.

As for Mosin's, I definitely go for the Hex receiver.  A lot of them are prewar, and have considerably better finishing.  I had a round-receiver rifle that the barrel stampings looked like they were done by a cross-eyed retard. Understandable considering the conditions they were produced under, but still a negative, in my opinion.

As was stated previously, Czech VZ-24s (and Yugo M24-47s) are still out there for not too much more, and are FINE rifles.  Unfortunately, the cheap 8mm has disappeared.

our definitions of cheap must be different.  sure, prices arn't as low as they were a few years ago, but 8mm is still cheap by todays standards.
