Can anyone tell me anything about this rifle. It has no crest on the receiver ring and I cannot find anything exactly like it in my Mausers of the World 4th Ed. It appears to be 7mm and has no import marks that I could find. Thanks |

great thanks guys. any idea why it doesnt have a crest on the receiver ring?? were these ever scrubbed by a different country? This one has the original barrel. Looking at page 339 of Mauser of the World 4th Ed. it appears this is a second pattern, however the stock doesnt have any cross bolts. also the floorplate is released via a depressed button on the upper right side of the forward part of the trigger housing rather than what appears in the picture as centered in the trigger loop. As a matter of fact it doesnt look like any of the 4 rifles pictured on page 339. The stock and trigger housing of mine look exactly like the picture on top of page 341 shown as a Spanish-Republican made Model 1916 Carbine. |

1893/16 Spanish Mauser.
It is thought that the scrubbed receivers were used in the Spanish Civil War circa 1936. Lots of rifles around with scrubbed crests that were possibly used in the Spanish Civil War. I had a Polish Kar98a that was allegedly used in that conflict. Its a very common milsurp and not especially desirable due to the low quality in general of Spanish Mausers. It would have more interest if its still in the original 7x57mm caliber and not the 7.62 conversion. There use to be a pretty good website on these. Do some googling using 1893/16 or 1916 Spanish Mauser. Dutch |

What you have is an "unmarked" 1916 Spanish Mauser. I've got one that I got from Montgomery Wards for under $20 back in about 1967. It's in 7 X 57 Mauser and it shoots really good and is very accurate. The one you have shown us in the pictures has all it's parts, is dirty and the bluing is gone, but otherwise it looks pretty good. Mil. Surp. 7 X 57 ammo is fairly hard to find these day, but try Samco in Miami, they have some occasionally that is pretty good stuff. Otherwise, commercial 7 X 57 ammo is safe, as they load it to standards that this rifle can handle. Enjoy your rifle and don't "Bubba" it. It's only about a $200 - $300 rifle, but is a nice example of days gone by. ETA: I went back and looked at the pictures some more and the cleaning rod on the gun shown is not the original rod. |

guys- thanks for all the responses. the issue of ammo availability pushed me to trade it for a K98. while I like the idea of having both 7 and 8mm mausers, i wont have a gun i cannot shoot at a reasonable cost. not to mention I made 35% on my investment during my trade. |
