I'm very new to Garands in general and the CMP's grading system in particular, so please forgive the newbie question...

I have a line on an M1 Garand that the seller says was bought in the late 1990s as a "Select Grade" from CMP. According to the CMP website though, there isn't a select grade. Did they change their grading system at some point? Would this be the equivalent of the "new" CMP collector grade? Rifle has a serial number that dates it to August 1943 for whatever difference that makes.

"SELECT GRADE: Same as Service Grade but initially picked out for nicer external appearance. Metal finish is very good to excellent, and the stock will have fewer dents, gouges and bruises. However, the main difference is assured bore condition: throat erosion will not exceed 2 (minor wear). If the gauge reading is greater than 2, a rifle is classified as Service Grade regardless of its external condition. Limit of one per customer per calendar year when available."

You should buy it. 1k would even be a decent price.

Select grade from the  90's is probably  different from anything offered today

Thanks for the replies! I went ahead and got it for $900. Can't wait for it to get here

Still don't have my paws on it, but as the seller has received payment and the rifle is on its way I guess I can put up some preliminary pics:

You better have a gunsmith check that muzzle crown out before you shoot it, it looks nicked. Nice looking rifle.

Yep. This should be the poster child for proper cleaning technique and equipment. The good news is that it shouldn't be difficult or expensive to fix.

Yup, one of my best friends is a gunsmith who does really good work so that's the first thing that'll be done to it. Not sure I'll ever shoot it but it still needs doing.

Looks like a clean arsenal rebuild.......that got dropped on the muzzle!

The buttplate is a tad scuffed but that's no big deal.  Overall a nice gem.

Well it's here! Like a kid at Christmas LOL - wrapping and packing tape everywhere. Happy to find that the seller included the original CMP certificate, paperwork, and operating manual. The good news is that the muzzle is nowhere near as bad as it looks in the photo. Possibly the camera flash didn't do it any favors in the seller's pics, but either way I'll still get it checked out.

There's something sexy about the sound the operating rod handle makes when it's pulled back to fully locked. Haven't heard it from any other rifle.

Yeah I'm in love already.

WHAT??? What do  you mean you're not sure you'll ever shoot it! What the hell is wrong with you, man. Shoot that bad boy!

LOL. My fiancee thinks it's a mid-life crisis at 36. This plus the M1 carbine that's inbound makes 7 C&R rifles so far in 2010, plus an AR-10 and 3 Stag AR15s. Not sure I'll shoot any of the C&Rs kind of like a stamp collector never uses the stamps to send mail. I know, I'll hand in my man card on the way out

Two things:
1.) Your fiancee just needs to get used to it.
2.) Shoot that Garand!

I went to the CMP South store today. I was in heaven. Racks upon racks of M1Garands and M1 Carbines. There were even 22s and pellet guns for those so inclined. The older guy, that was the head armourer, snatched me up as soon as I brought a rifle up to the counter. He took out his bullet gauge and showed me how it gauged. He then took the rifle apart and showed me that the rifle was an all matching SA with the barrel in the proper range for the serial. Then he came out from behind the counter and found me a better rifle for less money that gauged the same. He did all this without me even asking him. He stocks those shelves with his picks every Wednesday. I figure that less than a 1 on the bullet gauge has to be ok. It was the most pleasant gun buying experience that I have had in my 40+ experiences. It was great to hold a piece of history in my hands. The rifle was beautiful. The guy even tried to save me sales tax by having it shipped to me, even though I bought it in the store. I paid the $81 in sales tax just so I could ogle the rifle for another week. I had never seen so many M1 Garands before.
