I have a question about non-C&R firearms record keeping. I just got my license a week or so ago and am starting to record all the non-C&R guns I already have in the book I got in the RK Enterprises packet. What information is ATF-required? The amount of info asked in this book is crazy:
>Manufacturer >Model >SN >Type >Caliber/gauge >New/used/acquired unfired >Date of mfg >Country of mfg ># shots >Barrel length >Choke >Finish >Optics >Other accessories >Comments >Acquisition >Disposition >Improvements/repairs/modifications Which of these do I need to include? I figure at least the first 5, but is anything else specifically required by the ATF? |

I think he may just be recording them because he wants to. I did the same thing when I got my C&R... having a list of guns and their serial numbers is a good idea in case any are ever stolen. I keep my non-C&R records on separate, removable pages from my C&R guns, so I can remove this non-required information before showing my bound book to the ATF if I ever get inspected.
My bound book contains manufacturer/importer, model, serial number, type, caliber, when and from whom I acquired it, and when and to whom I disposed of it. I believe this is sufficient to meet the requirements. Here's a sample page. |

1. I would refrain from logging any non-C&R firearms in my C&R logbook. Also note, you DO NOT need to log any C&R elligible firearms that you obtained before your license was granted. I have more C&R firearms from before I received my license than after. I need to fix that!
2. Do yourself and your insurance company a favor. Make a seperate written log and photographic log of all your firearms, including a clear close-up of the serial number, accessories, reloading equipment, etc. I keep a written log and photographic log on a CD in each gun safe and my personal safe. Anything valuable that I have gets a photograph and documentation as well. Also, make sure your insurance is adequate. Most homeowners policies only cover a base amount for firearms, etc. |
