I just bought a Chilean mauser with all parts matching and the crest on top on the action appears to have been removed. You can tell that it was there at one time but does anyone know why it would have been removed. Also does anyone know of any link to find out the age of this rifle, Thanks.

A circle with a cross in it, a circle with one line through it, a shield looking symbol, the serial number is F40**, the bolt has a star like symbol

Many countries have a policy of removing a crest when the rifle is sold as surplus since the rifle is no longer in their service.

Chilean 95's have a fairly light stamped crest to begin with , you see plenty were they are barely visable from beibg worn from use.

F series is probably 1897-8 production.
