What brand/country should I be looking forin the surplus market. If possible non corrosive but not a must. There is not much, if any, brass cased 7.62x54R surplus ammo out there and even less that is boxer primed. Give up and by the corrosive stuff or buy new PPU ammo, then reload. |

I was afraid that would be the answer. Whats PPU? Ammo made in Serbia. Sold in the US under as Wolf Gold or under their name, Prvi Partizan Ammunition. Their headstamp is ППУ, PP or PPU. The 54R is a straight forward case to reload. It has ~2% to 5% more case capacity than the .308, but operates at lower pressure. |
| It's not really comparable, but I found S&B brass to be total shit in .303 Brit. Wolf Gold and PPU is a lot better. S&B couldn't survive one FL resizing and firing. Wolf Gold and PPU have been fired in a different gun, FL resized, fire formed, and LEE neck sized atleast 6 times. I only FL size it once I get it, but it's held up fine with neck sizing after the initial fire forming. |

Now, if any of my reloading trays could fit a 7.62X54R case...
ETA: I load them with the same 123gr bullets I load 7.62X39. Very accurate and less expensive. You'll do better with neck sizer dies and .311 Sierra 174gr Matchkings! Go get some new Graff brass from Huntington's or better yet, Norma or Lapua brass and start making match grade ammo as long as your bore and crown are great. |

Nice! About how big is that 48gr. load? Any idea on velocity? 2.780 is the OAL. I don't have chrono info on this load, but it shows no sign of over pressure in my rifles and recoil is very manageable. YMMV, all standard disclaimers apply, etc. ETA: I do not crimp this load. |

I'm sorry, I meant to ask "How big is that 48gr. group?" |

54R is so cheap do you really save any money reloading it or do you just reload it for accuracy reasons? accuracy and suitable hunting loads. the majority of my shooting is done with surplus. but a 150gr .312 hornady sp over varget makes a good shooting round thats suitable for whitetail. |

You can load more accurate ammo for about the same price. In my case I enjoy the hours spent at the loading bench. Our Pacific Northwest winters give us a lot of indoors time. I reload during the winter and shoot it during the summer. I supplement my reloads with surplus when I get it at a good price. |

Some of it has been loaded over 40 times and is still going strong. Mind you these are fairly light loads and they are only neck sized, but they have yet to split or go out on me. |
