Just saw a SVT 40 1940mfg at a local FFL. Asking price is $959.00. It was in pretty good shape from the brief look I got at it.
Numbers matching (except the mag) and the bolt was electropenciled. The stock has a repair done on it but it is numbered to the gun. Any idea on value? I have wanted a 7.62x54r semi-auto for a long time but $959 seems a bit steep.

$959 does seem steep. I got mine for around $500 a couple of years ago .

It's a fantastic rifle

it really depends,

most I've noticed have been the russian imports from the 90's, blued/plum colored bolts, for 800ish,
some non imports, with the bolt and carrier in the white have been out there for more,

several were listed on Gunboards.com last week, not sure what they sold for,

do a quick search on their trader section, the EE here, and Gunbroker, should answer your question,,

and yep, fantastic shooters, paid 299 for mine, back in the day,,

Refurbed imports $700-800. Older Finn marked imports can be found but condition varies greatly.

See if he would do $800 otd, if not walk.

Got mine on Gunbroker last year for a little over $800

Never skip a chance to show one of your arms off.

Got mine for $350 from a buy who didn't know what it was.
Sorry, I usually hate posts like that.

While we're talking SVT-40's what kind of round do you guys generally shoot?  I'm trying to get away from the corrosive stuff, which I have a ton of unfortunately (the Mosins will eat it, slowly but surely) and there doesn't seem to be much I can find that isn't heavy and non-corrosive.
I picked up 500rds of 209gr soft point Barnaul recent production stuff, but man is it a heavy round.  Am I stupid to be shooting a 209gr round out of the SVT-40?  The blue-box stuff seems corrosive as hell to me, and the Olympic brass cased stuff will NOT eject for me.

Only ammo I have shot in mine has been surplus. I've read heavy ball is ok, just need to "tune" the gas system to it. Currently I'm set on 1.3 and haven't had any trouble, an occaisional smoke stack or FTL.

$800+ is about par for the course in terms of the refurb (plum bolt/electropencil force match) rifles these days.  Non-refurbs sell for more, and a nice example will exceed $1000.

Mine all tend to like different ammo best, but they all seem to do fairly well with Czech Silver tip light ball, and Albanian of all things....go figure.

Apart from finding one at the complete lack of gunshows in my area, does anyone know of a place to get one?  It's pretty hard to arrange a transfer around here without spending ~100 bucks plus the hassle.

About the only place, other than a gunshow that you'll find an AVT these days is online.

You can try the trader sections of Gunboards, Gunbroker, and Auction Arms, as there always seems to be one or two for sale.

Here in the Carolinas, I can sometimes see 5-6 SVT's at a show ( but they want $1000 for them), and see none for the next 5-6 shows in a row....it's spotty.

You could always register wanting an SVT-40 on Empire Arms' "Wishlist" feature.  How that works is you tell them what you're looking for and how much you want to spend, and when they get one (they buy collections), they contact you.  It can take awhile, but eventually, you'll get the call.

I started buying SVT's in 2002-2003, when they were selling for $500-$600.  I got all of mine for less than $300 (buying my last one in 2005) by getting very lucky, finding them at gunshows (on walk-ins), gunshops (where the owners didn't know what they were or what current worth was), or at auctions (where I got a Finn capture for $150, because it was marked "French MASS Paratrooper Rifle in 7.62NATO").  It was mostly "luck" in finding them, as I refused to pay market value (I'm cheap), but I have champagne tastes

Good luck in your search.

My SVT-40 and Finn M-39s love the Albanian. I've found it to be very accurate. The brass cases cyle like buttah.
