I don't know anything about older rifles, but a guy at work sold me a german mouser type gun for 35$ I took it home and cleaned it up best i could without to much scrubbing.  It says spandau1890 on the barrel and gew88 and a half moon with a s next to it.  I have no clue what it even shoots,i am guessing 8mm but i heard not to shoot modern loads through it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See here for more info. The 88 model is an older version of the 98 Mauser. I'm not sure, but I don't think modern 8mm Mauser ammo is recommended for these 88 model rifles. The 88 has a bore diameter of .318 as opposed to .323 for modern 8mm Mausers.

You gotta shoot it! Norma makes a 8x57j (i).318. They also make a .323(JS in the U.S. IS in Europe). You can get the ammo ordered at a local dealer. Forget the "reduced" load deal

The Commission Gewehr 1888 is not a Mauser in any way/shape/form.

It sounds like you have a Turkish converted commission 88 rifle (crecent moon stamp). The S stamp could mean that the bore has been changed to shoot the modern .323 round. I wish you could take some pics of it and then i could say for certain.

Slugging the bore would help in ID'ing the gun

The 88 is not a Mauser.  It is called the Commission rifle.  It is nothing like a G98 or K98.  I like them and have one or two.
