when i put up my mosin i decock it by holding part of the bolt that goes forward when you pull the trigger, then i pull the trigger and eas it forward. i havnt done that with a round chambered because i didnt think it was a good idea. would there be anything wrong with doing that?

Don't let the firing pin down on a loaded chamber! While it may not fire if the pin is let down slowly, but any bump of the cocking piece will fire the round. The firing pin will rest against the primer

Yea,don't do it. When theres a round in the chamber the only thing you should be doing with that piece is pull it back and turn it to the left on safe and keep your finger off the trigger.

Once it is empty (and bolt open), just pull the trigger first, then slide the bolt fwd. One less step.

there is a way to de cock it.... after chambering a round move the bolt until it is almost vertical(there should be a little spot when it hangs up) and  pull the trigger. the bolt will rotate it self down and the rifle will then be uncocked with a round in the chamber.

...and the firing pin resting against the primer

Im sorry but there is no such thing as "De-cocking" a Mosin. When the firing pin spring is at rest the firing pin is protruding from the bolt face, period.

Probably not even a good idea at the range.

If you decock it when the bolt is not fully closed there is the possibility of the firing pin setting off the round that's going into the chamber.  If that happens without the bolt fully closed then it would most likely blow the bolt back towards you and probably a lot of escaped gas and stuff coming out.

Not with a live round in the chamber!    You have a live one in the chamber, fire it or eject it, that is your two choices.
