SMLE!

You gotta get all three types!

The No1MKIII, the No4, and the No5!

Short Magazine Lee Enfield for sure.

The 2As are an interesting novelty, but they've got no history other than 'the rifle Sanjay used to guard the Taj Mahal'.

yes, get them all

Mosin's are cheap, if you want to start that way.
K31 are a little different and very cool

I would start with either of them

I would start with a K31 and then move on to the SKS variants.

How about an M39 instead of the M44 or 91/30.

SKS is a good one to have . A .308 bolt gun Enfield  ? may be a good one too .

If you like to shoot MOA or less at 100 yds with iron sights, get a K31.  They also scope up real nice with the clamp-on mount.  Took my first deer with one.  If you can find a good deal jump on it, they have been creeping up in price lately.

I've been considering this mount:  home.comcast.net/~yzhu/accumount/

click on Swiss k31 scope mounts ans check out the mount at the bottom of the page.

K31s are already going up in price. If you want one, get one now.

Go for the history of the weapon, get the K98, of course get one with lots of Nazi markings.

K31 or K98. I like both equally. Having 2 K31s and 1 K98, they have all done 2-2.5 MOA off the bench with irons and Prvi factory ball.

ETA: OP when/where are you going to basic?

The 2A shoots awesome though. Nice and heavy, no recoil, accurate as well. Had to refinish mine, changed the firing pin spring with a wolff one. A real difference, but I am sure someone would argue that just to argue.

well first i would get a k31 due to rising prices and they're starting to get scarce. then an smle for sure, the 2a are a cool and great shooting rifles and the mosins are dirt cheap and plentiful and the k98's are a little pricey but everywhere as well. thats where i would start.

I would go with the Enfield. Although they are still out there they are getting harder to find and the prices are going up. It's the same story with the K31 and 98's. The 91/30's & 44's will be around for awhile yet.

Mosin is the only milsurp that makes sense right now when you factor in the ammo. I'm very happy with my M39. Then get the Garand.

Ihave a sporterized 2A that I like just fine, but off your list the SKS would still be my first pick for several reasons.
